Therevision of this definitive, two-volume reference work is dedicated to themaintenance of a comprehensive approach to the practice of pediatricgastroenterology.

Thetext of the fifth edition was extensively reviewed to assess the continuingrelevance and, as a result, the size and content of various sections have beenmodified and new chapters have been added. Each author, selected because ofparticular expertise in the field, has provided an authoritative andcomprehensive account of his or her topic. In addition, new sections have beenadded to reflect the expanding complexity of the field, particularly newtechniques now used to accurately establish complex diagnoses.

Aswith previous editions, the size and content of each section has been modifiedand new chapters added to reflect an increasing evolution of subspecialtyprograms within gastroenterology and a better understanding of subspecialtyconditions (motility, inflammation, and autoimmune bowel disease) that haveemerged in pediatric gastroenterology. As theimportance of genetics and molecular biology in the pathophysiologyand diagnosis of complex pediatric conditions of thegut, pancreas, and liver have become appreciated, expanded chapters cover theirimportance in the field. Furthermore, a more comprehensive representation ofworld leaders in pediatric gastroenterology among theeditors of this edition has expanded the authorship to reflect experts inspecific diseases within various continents rather than principally in North America. In other words, the edition is dedicatedto a comprehensive, worldwide approach to the practice of pediatricgastroenterology.
